The story of Alea begins in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic.
Born from the vision of an Italian collective of anthropologists, artists, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, Alea was founded as an associative project. Its goal is to create an unprecedented space for communicating and accessing humanistic scientific knowledge, experimenting with creative forms and methodologies open to transdisciplinary collaboration.
At the heart of the association and its publishing house is the journal. The Italian chapter of the magazine (2021–2024) consists of six volumes: four thematic issues and two special editions, where multiple voices—authors and researchers alike—intertwine through the shared sensibility of fieldwork. This initial publishing cycle has been brought together in the Archivio 2124 collector’s box.
In 2025, Alea embarks on a new chapter. The editorial direction of the project seeks to engage even more critically with the uncertain becomings of contemporary life, emphasising the urgency of a fieldwork perspective.
The journal now adopts a new bilingual (Italian-English) annual format, broadening the kaleidoscope of perspectives and collaborations that fuel the project.
The Open Call for the first issue is now live—submit your proposal by 14 April 2025.
